Biography
Singer-songwriter Jael Bird Joseph has been active since 2005 on the Indie scene in the province of Quebec. Since appearing on the TV show 'THE VOICE' Quebec in 2013, he has become a popular figure. Having self-produced most of his music throughout his career, he continues to write his own music and lyrics and does most of the arrangements to his songs. He also produced his own albums, learning the trade by trial and error. "I really wanted to keep creative control from A to Z, and doing everything was a fantastic learning experience. I had to know the different aspects of producing concerts and records, but the biggest lesson I learned was that I never wanted to make an album alone again. It's a huge undertaking and can be very unsettling, not always knowing if what you're doing really works. Plus, it's always rewarding to share your passion with others," he explains with a smile. "I really needed to do everything alone back then, it was part of my very personal artistic development. Now, I welcome collaborators with open arms - it brings a lot to the music, even if I still do a lot on my own." 

"For the latest record I really benefited from the help of my producer Francis Perron at Radicart Studios who was there throughout the process. From crowd funding the CD to engineering sound at the CD release event! His help has been so precious". 

Early beginnings
Until the age of seventeen, Jael Bird Joseph's family had been on the move, his mother trying to provide for her 7 children. Between living in the United States and Ontario, he barely spoke French when he arrived in Quebec, knowing just the little that his mother had taught him. 

During a solitary adolescence, music became a means of bringing to light deeply hidden emotions. It became his preferred method of expression as an indirect channel through which he could speak his mind, in an environment where personal needs were mostly ignored and new ideas were shunned. Music then became a passion, a refuge and provided comfort in times of need. He began learning guitar and singing at the early age of 13. In 1999, at the tender age of 15, he wrote his first song. 

In his music, Jael Bird Joseph tells of his life changing events and experiences, all of these a series of occurrences originating from the day his father left his mother before he was born, and everything that followed. The break-up had led to his mother leaving Canada, which initiated the long line of events that ensued. 

Completely self-taught in music, the young 17 year old singer songwriter felt like he had hit a wall, musically speaking. He then chose to head back to his birthplace, Trois-Rivières in Quebec, to study music. The choice of the city had been made mostly for financial reasons, the costs for education being much lower in that province but also because his grandmother lived there and could offer a place to stay while he gradually learned to live on his own. There he studied jazz guitar and improved his musical knowledge and song writing skills, being immersed in a great variety of musical styles. He now includes many of these jazz, blues, funk and world music influences in his songs. 

During his years studying music, Jael Bird Joseph recorded his first tracks using rented equipment at the local music store. Of these first songs, he selected 8 tracks that became his first EP, Life ... In An Hourglass (now discontinued). These recordings were the first sparks of a passion for recording music that has grown ever since. 

After the release of his EP in 2005, he moved to the city of Quebec to prepare his next album and further his studies at University. In 2010, he released his second and third albums in a 23 track double CD comprising Beneath the Widow Tree (finished in 2007) and The Blind Sessions (finished in 2009). The albums are now sold separately. However, 'The Blind Sessions' had been recorded and added to the album because the release of 'Beneath the Widow Tree' had taken so long that the songs didn't really represent the new musical direction he was taking in 2009. He wanted to take a folk direction and he didn't want to confuse the audience with an acoustic pop-alternative CD. So the albums were combined and they covered the two distinct writing periods. 
 

After The Voice 
The summer and the fall of 2013 were pretty hectic for Jael Bird Joseph as he travelled the province of Quebec to play concerts and introduce his songs to the public who had mostly known him for covers on The Voice. An album was already in the works at that time, but was put on hold due to lack of funding. Among the many concerts he played throughout the province were impressive venues such as a concert at the Bell Center with Annie Villeneuve, a show called "12 Voix" at the Festivent de Lévis in front of 20 000 fans and a concert with his band at Festivoix de Trois-Rivières in front of 10 000 fans. Other notable concerts were sold out venues in Dolbo-Mistassinni (500 fans) and Pavillon Arthabaska (300 fans) in Victoriaville. 

Today
Jael Bird Joseph now lives in Trois-Rivières with his son Elijah who is now 5 years old. His new album 'The Journal of Forgotten Memories' was released on Nov 7th 2016.

Une voix, dix doigts, une guitare. C'est tout ce dont Jael Bird Joseph a de besoin pour toucher droit au fond de l'être. Coup de coeur à chaque fois, sa musique mélodieuse aux saveurs folk, bien que facile d'écoute et accrocheuse, demeure unique au point qu'on ne puisse identifier d'artiste comparable. Biographie
Révélé au grand public en 2013 grâce à  l' émission «LA VOIX, (Québec)», l'auteur-compositeur-interprète Jael Bird Joseph avait été actif depuis 2005 sur les scènes indépendantes depuis son retour en province suite aux voyages avec sa famille. Principalement auto-produit dans l'ensemble de sa carrière, il est auteur-compositeur ainsi qu'arrangeur principal de ses chansons. Il avait également fait la réalisation de ses trois premiers albums. "C'était une nécessité de garder le contrôle artistique de A à Z et une belle expérience d'apprentissage sur les divers aspects du monde de la musique. Mais je retiens surtout que faire un album en solo ne comporte pas que des avantages. C'est un exercice qui exige beaucoup et qui peut devenir insécurisant. En effet, entreprendre ce genre de boulot en solitaire n’apporte pas le recul nécessaire pour apprécier ou questionner le travail que l’on fait et un moment donné on ne sais plus si ça marche ou pas. De plus, ne pas avoir quelqu’un en studio avec qui partager sa passion peut devenir carrément ennuyeux!" explique-t-il en riant. "Je ressentais le besoin de faire tout ça seul à cette époque. Ça a fait partie de ma démarche artistique très personnelle au début. Maintenant, j'accueille à bras ouvert les collaborateurs, ce qui ajoute de la richesse à la musique, bien que je fasse encore beaucoup de travail en solo".  

"Pour le plus récent album, j'ai pu grandement bénéficier de l'aide précieuse de mon réalisateur, Francis Perron au Studio Radicart, qui m'a accompagné durant tout le processus, de la campagne de socio-financement à la sonorisation pour le soir du lancement. Son aide a été vraiment cruciale pour y arriver."

Les débuts 
Dès les tous premiers mois de sa vie jusqu'à l'âge de 17 ans, Jael Bird Joseph vit tel un nomade, parcourant l’est du Canada et des États-Unis au gré de multiples déménagements. Sa mère cherchait alors à améliorer le sort de la famille, étant le seul soutien pour ses sept enfants. Jael ne parlait que les quelques mots de français que sa mère lui avait appris lorsqu'il revint dans la province de Québec. 

Une adolescence en solitaire lui fait découvrir la musique, qui devient alors une forme de refuge, un endroit où exprimer en toute quiétude les moments d’espoir et de tristesse. Un lieu où les jugements n’existent pas, où il peut révéler sans crainte des sentiments réprimés, longtemps emprisonnés dans sa forteresse intérieure. Il a 13 ans lorsqu'il commence à gratter la guitare. Il écrit sa première chanson en 1999, à l'âge de 15 ans. 
   
Dans ses chansons, Jael Bird Joseph raconte les évènements marquants de sa vie. Entre autres, il écrit sur l’abandon de sa mère par son père et comment cet évènement a altéré à tout jamais le parcours que la vie avait préalablement établi.    
   
 « Chaque moment de mon vécu, joie ou traumatisme, est d'une certaine façon lié à cet évènement, de façon directe ou indirecte. Sans cet élément déclencheur, ma vie aurait eu un tournant complètement différent, et je ne serais certainement pas la personne que je suis aujourd’hui. C’est entre autres grâce à cette longue suite d’évènements que j’en suis venu à apprendre la musique. Qui sait, peut-être n’aurais-je même jamais mis la main sur une guitare! Donc, comment pourrais-je en vouloir au responsable? », explique l'artiste qui a récemment renoué avec son père.  
   
Originalement autodidacte, le destin mènera l’artiste au lieu de sa naissance, Trois-Rivières, pour entreprendre l’étude de la musique afin de parfaire son jeu à la guitare. Par la même occasion, il apprend à maîtriser l’art du chant et de la composition. Les apprentissages en histoire et en théorie musicale qui lui permettront de découvrir de nouveaux horizons et ses créations musicales seront désormais plus riches, nuancées, complexes et diversifiées incluant depuis des influences de Jazz, de musiques du monde et de Blues.  
   
Au cours de ses études, il réalise en solo plusieurs pistes audio desquelles il sélectionne 8 chansons qui deviendront son premier album entièrement autoproduit, Life… in an hourglass. Un premier EP (maintenant discontinué) qui trace une voie remplie de passion pour l'enregistrement studio. 
   
Jael Bird Joseph s’installera par la suite dans la capitale nationale, Québec, où il préparera son second et troisième opus, une collection de 23 nouvelles chansons présentées dans un coffret double qui a pour titre Beneath the widow tree & the Blind sessions. "The Blind Sessions avait été ajouté à l'album. En effet,  le lancement de l'album avait tardé et les chansons de "Beneath the Widow Tree" ne représentaient plus la direction artistique que je désirais prendre à ce moment là... Je visais quelque chose de plus folk et je ne voulais pas induire le public en erreur. J'ai donc lancé un album double, le coffret couvrant deux périodes d'écritures distinctes", explique-t-il. Il lance cet album le 1er avril 2010 suite à trois années de travail acharné. Ces albums sont maintenant vendus séparément.  

Après La Voix   
Jael Bird Jospeh a profité de l’été 2013 pour parcourir le Québec afin de présenter ses nouvelles chansons, seul avec sa guitare ou accompagné de musiciens. Il s’est arrêté entre autres au Festivoix de Trois-Rivières pour un concert devant une foule de plus de 10 000 personnes et au Festivent De Lévis avec le spectacle «12 Voix» devant plus de 20 000 personnes. Il fait également salle comble avec son nouveau spectacle devant plus de 500 personnes à Dolbeau-Mistassinni ainsi qu’au Pavillon Arthabaska de Victoriaville (devant un public de plus de 300 personnes).  

Aujourd'hui  
Jael Bird Joseph habite maintenant Trois-Rivières avec son fils, Elijah, âgé de 5 ans. Son nouvel album, "The journal of Forgotten Memories" (Traduction : Le mémoire des souvenirs oubliés) est sorti le 7 novembre 2016.
